Why should your doctor study evolution?

The Alliance for Science (it Rhymes!) has announced their 2007 High School Essay Contest: Why would I want my doctor to have studied evolution. Entries must be in by March 31st, and there are also rewards for participating teachers. Spread the word!!

Sign me up for that Botox!

I read with interest this press release about combining botox and surgery to stop migranes.  it’s actually pretty smart–the sort of thing that once someone does it, you wonder why you didn’t think of that.
“It’s like a math equation. I will inject the Botox into one trigger point at a time and leave the others [...]

Must…Get….antibiotics….

I think I have strep throat, and am off to the Doc for confirmation. In the mean time, amuse yourself by reading the archives of one of my favorite new sites–This is Broken.
I especially like this photo of a Scrapbooking store. My feelings exactly.
Also, this entertaining news: Use of Antioxidant suppliments may increase mortality! [...]

I’m a Science Scout

Or, at least, I’m waiting for confirmation of my badges from The Order of the Science Scouts of Exemplary Repute and Above Average Physique.
Going through the list, I see that I have earned more badges than I ever did in the one dimly-remembered brownie troop year I had, and the significantly more embarrassing year [...]

She’s such a geek!

For all the geek girls reading this (N=2, probably): She’s such a Geek Photo Contest!
You have to enter before Feb. 28th, so get busy! It wouldn’t hurt to have one of ThinkGeek’s science t-shirts, either.
I have a photo of me doing geeky bug stuff somewhere around here….
UPDATED to add: First woman wins [...]

Spring. Almost.

We had a high of 39 degrees F here today, and I actually saw a blade of grass peek out from the snow!
I also saw 2 students walking around in parkas, flip flops, and shorts. Freaks!
I will immediately begin wearing shorts when the temp hits 60 (55, if it’s sunny), but I do [...]

Helpful Rationalization

More news from AAAS’ meeting…Chocolate makes you smarter!  Well, some chocolate, and increased blood flow, not more smarts, per se.
”During the session entitled “The Neurobiology of Chocolate: A Mind-Altering Experience?,” a panel of scientists presented evidence from several recent studies that demonstrated the enhanced brain blood flow after study participants consumed a specially formulated flavanol-rich [...]

Academic Haiku Contest!

Oh, I can’t wait for the results! Academic Haiku contest
I really liked this one, which I think every graduate student can identify with:
Please read my thesis.
Someone, please read my thesis.
Anyone? Please? Sigh.

Your Evolution “WTF?” of the day

Hey, I had no idea that evolution was just one of those crazy Kaballah ideas promoted by jews!
“Indisputable evidence — long hidden but now available to everyone — demonstrates conclusively that so-called ’secular evolution science’ is the Big Bang, 15-billion-year, alternate ‘creation scenario’ of the Pharisee Religion,” says the memo, which has Bridges’ name on [...]

Write Oprah!

FYI, Skepchick has posted a plea for us to all write Oprah and encourage her to disavow the psychics and fruity pseudoscientists she features on her show, just as she has done for James Frey.
I’d say it’s awesome, but I’m beginning to sound like Bill and Ted.
