DDT and Attacks on Rachel Carson: The CliffsNote Version

I thought this might be a good time to put up a collection of different posts I (and others) have written about the ongoing attacks on Rachel Carson.
What’s the issue?
A Salon article (with more from May Berenbaum!) provides a nice introduction:
Socrates Litsios, a historian and former scientist for the World Health Organization (the agency that [...]

Things have changed…

Yes, I decided to finally get around to customizing the WP theme. Except…I forgot that I have a huge annual report due tomorrow. So, in the mean time, things will just be a bit vanilla around here. While you wait, here’s some entertaining insect news:
June 16, 2007: Bee Terrorizes Dallas!

“A western honeybee measuring barely [...]

THIS is why you need to keep up on your journal reading…

Because if you don’t, you’ll miss an excellent two-part article in American Entomologist about Rachel Carson and Silent Spring! (Alas, reprints not available online yet.)
Anelli, Carol M., Christian H. Krupke and Renee Priya Prasad. “Professional Entomology and the 44 Noisy Years Since ‘Silent Spring’. Part 1.” American Entomologist, vol. 52, no. 4 (Winter 2006): [...]

Open Access Malaria Journal

Lots of folks are interested in research on malaria, and I thought you might want to know there is a very good open access journal:
http://www.malariajournal.com/
It has a very high citation impact rating, which is a sign of good rigor. Someday, maybe all journals will be open access….Sigh.
Many of the papers cover the increasing difficulty [...]

Bee Update

May Berenbaum has a very nice interview in Smithsonian Magazine about Colony Collapse Disorder, and the importance of bees in general.
“Is this really a crisis? It’s a crisis on top of a crisis. [It had previously been projected that] commercial beekeeping [might] cease to exist in the United States by 2035—and that was before colony [...]

Jazz Quotes! (and random iterms)

Matt, one of the MOST EXCELLENT WordPress Dudes, has a great page with quotes from famous jazz musicians. Enjoy the randomness!
I loved this one from Wes Montgomery:
“I never practice my guitar… from time to time I just open the case and throw in a piece of raw meat.”
Also, your LOL of the day:
Latonya, the naughty [...]

Setting the record straight on Rachel Carson

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has a very nice post about DDT, in which they are quite clear that Rachel Carson is not the anti-Christ. I specifically refer you to their “Common misconceptions about DDT” section:
“#3. Rachel Carson Called for the Elimination of All Pesticides.
“It is not my contention that chemical insecticides must [...]

Disturbing new student mental health study

This is pretty much what I have always suspected, but it’s upsetting to have it confirmed:
Help-Seeking and Access to Mental Health Care in a University Student Population.
Medical Care. 45(7):594-601, July 2007.
Eisenberg, Daniel PhD; Golberstein, Ezra BA; Gollust, Sarah E. BA
Objective: To quantify mental [...]

How to be a crank

As a follow up for the new Internet DSM categories:
Denialism Blog: How to be an effective Crank.
I especially like step 3, instructions on how (not) to respond to criticism of your crank theory. This seemed like an appropriate topic, since I’ve had several snarky drive by comments today.
