It’s God’s will that we have roaches…

Really! (wag of antennae to Pharyngula for finding this):
“If this is God’s provision for us, that means He has called me to contend with roaches again. As I contemplate what that will be like, it helps to think about how the Author and Finisher of my faith lived. He chose to be [...]

Evolution: Education and Outreach

Wow! The journal Evolution: Education and Outreach will be free for all of 2008!
From a press release:
“Evolution: Education and Outreach promotes understanding and teaching of evolutionary theory for a wide audience. Targeting students of all ages including undergraduates, teachers and scientists alike, the journal publishes articles to aid members of these communities [...]

The Ant Analogy

I wanted to direct everyone to a really great essay about ants, termites, and using their societies as a metaphor for human society:
The Ant Analogy
I liked it so much, I couldn’t pick a chunk to excerpt. Go read the whole thing in context.
Qarrtsiluni is an online literary magazine, and actually has had several insect entries [...]

More racism in Michigan

Ugh. I’ve mentioned before that Michigan State University has a recognized hate group on campus. (And that we’ve had some noose incidents at WMU.)
So, joy! Young Americans for Freedom is about to bring in a new speaker, to follow the Brit Neo-nazi they hosted a few months ago:
“The Michigan State University chapter of Young Americans [...]

Arthropods, Sex, and HIV

No, it’s been pretty thoroughly demonstrated that insects can’t transmit HIV. However, France has a pretty astonishing ad campaign (NSFW?) that uses two Arachnids to suggest unprotected sex can be dangerous. Interestingly, the spider is in the right position for actual sex, since sperm packets are transmitted via pedipalps. (Assuming it’s a [...]

Only in Rural Michigan….

I’m having trouble finding out where this guy was driving, but I strongly suspect they may have gone by my house:
Lansing State Journal
“CHARLOTTE - An Eaton Rapids man authorities say let his 9-year-old son help drive his pickup on Christmas Eve because he was drunk has been charged with operating while intoxicated [...]

More social angst

Gah! I’ve mentioned before that I’m not all that clued in socially. So, when I came into work today, I found even more Xmas presents from coworkers on my desk. I’ve only been here 2 months. It’s incredibly nice of them. But:
WHAT DO I DO NOW?
I mean, I know I write a thank [...]

The 12 Days of Christ…opher Walken

I love Christopher Walken. And that’s why I love this so much:
Christopher Walken’s 12 Days of Christmas
(Thanks to Raincoaster for pointing this out!)
Cracked also has a nice essay on the Real origins of Xmas.

FSBO houses, radio, and other news

I listed our house at FSBO.com last night, and today I’m looking in our local newspaper…and discovering that over 150 houses are in foreclosure in my county alone.
Oh dear.
They aren’t kidding about Michigan being#2 in foreclosures nationally. Oh, and we also have the highest unemployment rate.
So, my Xmas project is frantically cleaning the house. I’m [...]

Beetles and Assassin bugs

Two cool papers out this week–one on the adaptive radiation of beetles, and the other on assassin bugs and their lovely habit of decorating themselves with the corpses of their prey.
The Other 95% did a great job of covering the bugs, so I’ll talk more about the beetles. What a huge project this must have [...]
