On the road again

I will be on the road this weekend for a 4H conference up in North Michigan, so enjoy a pretty picture. I’m doing a CSI (Crime Solving Insects) workshop, so how about a shiny blowfly? Photo courtesy of Mrs. Jolanda.

They. Are. NOT. Beetles.

I don’t know why this irritates me so much, but it really does. I have been fighting with Snopes about this for years. (And they were really snotty and rude about my pointing out their taxonomic error, too! Most disappointing!)
What set me off this time is the news that Aveda is cutting out carmine and [...]

Carnival time: Leap Year edition!

Yep, it’s up at Conspiracy Factory. Check it out! A lovely tribute to Star Wars. (No Jar Jar Binks, thank goodness!)
Also, Carnival of the Spineless is up at Dendroica! Some very cool insect finds there.
Lastly, don’t miss this lovely photo and story at Annotated Budak: When ants attack!

Quote of the the Day: Education

This is for all the PhD’s and grad students out there in the Cult of Academia
“Getting an education was a bit like a communicable sexual disease. It made you unsuitable for a lot of jobs and then you had the urge to pass it on.”

Good Michigan news, for a change

Have children forgotten how to play?

I meant to post this earlier in the week–it continues some themes covered here in the Bug Blog earlier.
Old-Fashioned Play Builds Cognitive Skills
“Chudacoff’s recently published history of child’s play argues that for most of human history what children did when they played was roam in packs large or small, more or less unsupervised, and engage [...]

Happy Aniversary, Insect Film Festival!

Today marks the 25 year anniversary of the Insect Fear Festival, founded by May Berenbaum.
You can find a full listing of all the films shown at the IFF online–Alas, this year’s offering appears to be films that are terrifying only in terms of their scientific mangling: 2008’s theme is ‘Animated Social Insects’.

Roaches on television; heads roll

This is really not the usual Foreign policy news! Someone…please…find me this footage on YouTube!
From the Guardian:
“For the viewers of Turkmenistan’s popular nightly news programme, Vatan, it was another routine bulletin. But as the newsreader began the 9pm broadcast, viewers across the central Asian country spotted something unusual crawling across the studio table: [...]

International Insect eating!
Chiang Mai, Thailand - With over 1 400 insect species eaten by humans worldwide, the insect world offers promising possibilities both commercially and nutritionally, FAO said today. A workshop organized by FAO this week will discuss the potential for developing insects in the Asia and Pacific region.
