Weekly WTF: Hackers assault epileptics

You know, sometimes I read stuff online that makes me so mad, I just shake:
“Internet griefers descended on an epilepsy support message board last weekend and used JavaScript code and flashing computer animation to trigger migraine headaches and seizures in some users.
The nonprofit Epilepsy Foundation, which runs the forum, briefly closed the site [...]

Helpful hint to Academic Jobseekers

If you send me your CV via email, and tell me you really want to work at our wonderful university, you should probably use BCC to hide the fact that you sent exactly the same letter to 16 other institutions.
Not CC, so I can see all their addresses.
Just a hint.

Spring Peepers!!!

Spring peepers!! (*runs in circles*)
Listen
It’s official–it’s spring. They are out 1 week later than last year, but we also had a lot of snow this week.
Also: New Homeland Security Spring Color Threat system (from Wired). Our current threat level is Cantaloupe.

I Get Letters…

An amusing letter arrived earlier this week:
Hello,
My name is Margot and I’m the webmaster of www.best-pheromones.com. I wanted to know if you could do a paid UNBIASED review of our product/site.  Please let me know if you are interested.
Thank you,
Margot [name and email removed]
I was especially intrigued by the capitalization of “unbiased.” After [...]

Amusing Music Thursday

Wow. I soooooo wish I had the chutzpah to do this. I present: Leslie Hall, from Ames, Iowa.

There is, alas, no video for the song “Midwest Diva,” which you can hear on her MySpace page. Because it would probably be awesome.
Also, someone tell PZ that she’s got his octopi on her shoulders.

Pretty picture Thursday

The last post was a little heavy–how about some happy pictures?

This is a lovely photo of some water striders. They have water-repelling (hydrophobic) hair on their feet, which allows them to stand on the water.
You can see a larger view of this lovely photo at Ametexa’s page.

Weekly WTF: Hate group not in violation of MSU policy

You know, I really didn’t expect this. Although, given the current political climate, I shouldn’t be surprised:
“A Michigan State University investigation has concluded that two conservative student groups did not violate the university’s anti-discrimination policy.”
You can actually download a copy of the report, minus some of the “exhibits”, from the LSJ website. (Blood pressure [...]

Interesting insect art

I discovered a new artist today– Christopher Conte works with old sewing machine parts to make insects and other strange new life forms. From his profile:
“After earning a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art (BFA) from Pratt Institute, he [...]

Field Guide to Forest Pests…online!

Oh! I just found out that a book I own is now online in an updated version:
Field Guide to Common Insect Pests of Urban Trees in the Northeast
Since it’s the time of year to look for these things, here’s the page on oystershell scales, which I have in abundance on my lilacs. Grrr.
Now is a [...]
