From the ACS, although you can find it all over the net:

“President George W.Bsh’s federal budget for fiscal 2008 proposes an increase in total R&D spending, but it includes no new initiatives in science or energy research. Most of the increase goes to a few select departments, such as the Defense and Energy Departments and the National Science Foundation. The budgets of other R&D agencies will shrink.” (emphasis mine)

USDA,EPA and NIH actually will loose money, and the estimate of what increase the NSF will actually receive is only about 7%.

Worse, the USDA is being gutted. Depending on the estimates, up to 20% of the budget will be lost. This is stupid for a lot of reasons, but here are just a few:

  • The whole focus of the new “biofuels economy” depends on….plants. You know, the green leafy things. That USDA helps to grow.
  • The whole focus of the new “biofuels economy” has hugely driven up the price of corn, forcing a lot of cattle ranchers to dump cattle, or leave the business.
  • USDA helps us grow and protect food. As a….person of a certain girth…..I think that’s important.

I could go on, but you get my drift.
