This article in Psychology Today just makes me grind my teeth. Blondes are sexier, blue eyes are better, big boobs are preferred, and cheating on your wife is all natural. As explained by evolutionary psychology, of course…

I have, however, found some happy spots. Fred has done an awesome job pointing out the numerous “Just So-Story” errors in the article:

“To be fair, the greater reproductive success of the blue-eyed does explain why they predominate around the planet, with the exception of small population pools such as China, Africa, the Arab world, Southern Europe, Japan, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and South and Central America. It’s because men in all those dark-eyed, under-populated places can’t tell when women are interested.

The authors say that blonde hair evolved because it loses its luster with age, and turns brown, therefore signaling to a man that the woman is too old to have healthy offspring. That is, it has the evolutionary advantage of keeping its possessors from having many children. This would seem to indicate that blondes evolved after the invention of shampoo, since the hair of women who never bathe is presumably something short of lustrous.…
Again, note the complacent absurdity. Do you have difficulty distinguishing between brunettes of 15, 25, 35, 45, and 55, despite dentistry, hair conditioners, and facial creams? But not with blondes, right?

Say the authors, blondeness evolved in Scandinavia because women were covered with clothes and, without hair-luster as a signal of age, men couldn’t tell how old they were. This explains why so many young Eskimo men mate with grandmothers: They just can’t tell.”

Interestingly, the author of the paper has been criticized before, and in journals in which he’s published his research.

I’m starting to get really, really annoyed with this type of rationalization.  Sigh.

Wow…I read that POS article and I am stunned. This is a peer reviewed journal?

so: “Men can cognitively understand that many blond women with firm, large breasts are not actually 15 years old, but they still find them attractive because their evolved psychological mechanisms are fooled by modern inventions that did not exist in the ancestral environment.”
—-Boy, I sure fooled my husband, the rube!I didn’t even have to dye my hair…

“…Abuse, intimidation, and degradation are all part of men’s repertoire of tactics employed in competitive situations.”
—This smacks of the old, “Timmy is just hitting you because he LIKES you” argument. OK, blood is boiling now, steam coming out of ears……..AARRRRGGGGG!

  2. It really doesn’t surprise me. So much of modern though, even scientific thought is based in the idea that biology determines just about everything. How narrow minded can western science/medicine get? This same frustration led me to make a film about the biology myth in mental health. Though the medical model still holds strong…
