Ugh. It’s happening again:

University of Colorado police are investigating a series of threatening messages and documents e-mailed to and slipped under the door of evolutionary biology labs on the Boulder campus.

The messages included the name of a religious-themed group and addressed the debate between evolution and creationism, CU police Cmdr. Brad Wiesley said. Wiesley would not identify the group named because police are still investigating.

“There were no overt threats to anybody specifically by name,” Wiesley said. “It basically said anybody who doesn’t believe in our religious belief is wrong and should be taken care of.”

The first threat was e-mailed to the labs – part of CU’s ecology and evolutionary biology department housed in the Ramaley Biology building – on Friday. Wiesley said Monday that morning staff members found envelopes with the threatening documents slipped under the lab doors.

I’m no stranger to this; I had plenty of threats when I was teaching evolution myself. It’s not an isolated phenomena: here are just a few examples:

There are a bunch of seriously scary dudes running “christian” terrorist organizations, many of which are associated with Christian Identity Philosophy. So… why aren’t we freaking out about known terrorist orgs right here in the US?

Oh, yeah.
They aren’t brown terrorists.

Please also note that women who talk about evolution are almost always threatened with rape.

And just to make things more interesting, the Pope now says protestants aren’t Christians! Cripes. Hey, let’s travel back in time a couple hundred years, eh? Anyone got a match?

Edited to add: this post by Pharyngula, with more details on the threats. 07/12/07, and the identity of the threat maker 07/13/07.
And an update on the story 7/20/07

  1. Bloody Hell! I know we have our fair share of nutjobs here, but so far no one threatening teachers for teaching evolution… jeez! And you say you’ve had hassle too?

  2. What is it about Christians (the type that shouts loudest about their faith) that don’t seem to realise that this Jesus guy went around telling people about love and tolerance?

Which bit of the Bible do they skip over to come to their crazy conclusions? I guess these Christians ignore all the bits with Christ in…

  3. […] Bug Girl lists several instances of threats against teachers of evolution. The phenomenon is not new, and does not appear to be decreasing (though not rampant, either — thank God). […]

  4. Not to muddy the waters but I’m developing a new belief system that states that God is a giant teapot.

The proof of his/her presence is all those clouds up in the sky. Where else could they have possibly come from except an all-knowing, all-powerful teapot??

How this teapot created the universe is next on the to-do list. Meanwhile, I’m waiting for signs from those clouds…

  5. Teapot you say… Then count me in, sir! Count me in!

  6. I have several friends that teach biology at small colleges. *All* of them have stories about being harrassed by students about teaching evolution. One of them had a student throw a bible at him during a lecture.

This is not uncommon at smaller schools.

Someone already beat you to that idea.

  9. To factician:
IMHO, you should throw monkeys at those who throw bibles at you. It’d be damn funny! Also, try capturing it on video and upload it to youtube.

    Ook ook!
