A halloween tale of ghouls (with a happy ending)

Seasonal–sort of–news about some ghouls. Wiki says the word originates from monsters dwelling in grave yards. There is just nothing more ghoulish than Westboro Baptist Church, and they may finally be put to rest:

Baltimore, Maryland (AP) — A grieving father won a nearly $11 million verdict Wednesday against a fundamentalist Kansas church that pickets military funerals in the belief that the war in Iraq is a punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality….U.S. District Judge Richard Bennett noted the size of the award for compensating damages “far exceeds the net worth of the defendants,” according to financial statements filed with the court.”

Huzzah! I’ll refer you to the Anti-Defamation League for details of the despicable actions of the Church.

  1. This is great. Glad to see someone managed to stick it to those bastards.

I’m confused by the ending of the CNN article as to why the church “greeted the news with tightlipped smiles”. They’re a crafty bunch. You gotta wonder what these sleazy connivers have planned. I mean, they’re nothing but lowly media whores anyway, and there’s nothing like getting stuck with a bill for $11 million for free publicity, but there’s still a legal precedent against their extreme displays of bad taste, in addition to being on the hook for $11 million. What have they got to be happy about?

  2. Indeed. Phelps is planning to appeal, and seems to think he can have it overturned quickly.

Either that, or they plan claim the next natural disaster or state of emergency or something as proof that God is angry about the result of the law suit. Somehow I doubt that they believe their own vile rhetoric enough to expect God to go out of his way for their sorry ass. But natural disasters are frequent enough that they’ll have a chance to climb up on their soap box sooner or later.
