Found this lovely shot in Vanessa’s photo stream.

This is probably the butterfly known as the “88 butterfly” for patterns on the wings. You may notice there seem to be some legs missing–This family of butterflies, the Nymphalidae, have a very small first pair of legs. These legs aren’t used for walking, and are nearly invisible.

Another name for the group is 4-footed butterflies, or brush-footed butterflies.

Oh, and the power is back on, and comments are open again. Hot Showers!! W00t!!

  1. Wow, that’s gorgeous! There’s a wonderful butterfly garden at the Bronx Zoo and I used to love going there and looking at all the beauties.

  2. Beautiful shot! :)

  3. I wish Victoria still had a butterfly garden. I always wanted to go. Who cares if they poop on you, it’s BUTTERFLY poop!

PS you might like the latest post on which I cannot make a real link for fear Akismet will pounce. Trust.

  4. oh my.
    Yep, that’s pretty funny.

I never worried much about butterfly poop, but then, now I work with dairy cows. Not much of a comparison. :)
