This Monarch mashup has always boggled me:

Regarding the Viceroy on the “Monarch” billboard, one thing I wonder about: Given that the Viceroy’s mimicry of the Monarch is generally so good, why do they retain that telltale black stripe on the hindwing? Why is there that *one obvious marker* to set them apart from the Monarchs? If they go to such great lengths for a match, what’s the selective pressure to retain that single distinctive mark that lets us tell them apart by eye?
The only reason I can think of, is that they need some definite mark to tell *each other* from the Monarchs. Do Viceroys find mates by sight?
